Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk - Manhole Cover

Hugh Laurie, the actor famous for his role as Doctor Gregory House in the TV-series House MD, has released a soulful album entitled: Let Them Talk.

On the back of the cover, and on the back of the sleeve notes, are pictures of a beautiful manhole cover from New Orleans with ornamentation and the text:

"SEWERAGE & WATER BOARD
CRESCENT BOX
WATER METER
FORD METER BOX CO. WABASH. IND.
NEW ORLEANS"

COMUME DI PERUGIA ACQUEDOTTO manhole cover

This square manhole cover is from Perugia, in the Umbria province in central Italy. The manhole cover bears the year "1956". Also, it has the inscription "Acquedotto", probably referring to the old water supplies of the Italian cities.
A beautiful manhole cover that has become more polished with wear.

EISENGIESSEREI SONDERBURG EMIL GADE manhole cover

This manhole cover from Sønderborg is historically interesting. The text on the manhole cover is: "EISENGIESSEREI SONDERBURG EMIL GADE". The curious thing is that even though the manhole cover is placed in Denmark, the text is written not in Danish, but in German. Translated into English, the German text simply means “Iron foundry Sonderburg Emil Gade”.
The German text is probably due to the fact that the southern part of Denmark was lost to the Prussia in 1864. Prussia later became a part of a united Germany. The southern part of Denmark remained German until 1920 where it was voted back to be part of Denmark.
It is therefore likely that the manhole cover was made before 1920, or that the moulds at the Emil Gade iron foundry were made before 1920, and that the inscription on the manhole cover therefore is in German language.

SØNDERBORG KOMMUNE coat of arms manhole cover

Manhole cover with the coat of arms of Sønderborg, Denmark. The coat of arms shows a castle and water, referring to Sønderborg's historical and military importance and its location at Alssund, the strait between the island Als and Jutland.

HOLSTEBRO coat of arms manhole covers

Beautiful manhole covers from Holstebro, Western Denmark. They all bear the Holstebro coat of arms depicting Saint Georg killing the Dragon.
I find them all very elegant. The changing level of details is interesting.

VEJLE KOMMUNE 1955 manhole cover

What a beauty! The Vejle coat of arms can be seen in a stylized version.
I love the way the manhole cover is verdigrised.
The manhole cover can be found in front of Vejle Old Townhall.
I don't know what the year 1995 refers to, but would be curious to find out.
